Safe Excavating and Trenching

This half-day theory-based program highlights the components of undertaking a trenching or excavation activity. The program is designed to ensure that personnel are familiar with and fully understand all regulations involved when trenching or excavating activities take place. The course is presented as the job progresses, from the pre-planning stage to the actual dig.

Learning Objectives

  • Understanding the relevant sections of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code of Alberta
  • Review statistics during trenching operations
  • Discuss steps to be taken prior to trenching/excavating.
  • Understand different types of approvals/crossing agreements
  • Looking at pre-planning issues
  • Understanding roles and responsibilities of different parties involved (supervisor, operator, spotter)
  • Considerations for traffic control when working near roadways
  • Understanding procedures for excavation (maintaining sloping/cutbacks)
  • Becoming familiar with different classifications of soils
  • Looking at some common types of soil failure/collapse
  • Highlighting common procedures for shoring installation/removal

Competencies

The competencies of this program are tested and measured through 100% participation of the learning objectives. Participants must achieve a minimum pass mark of 70% on a written competency exam.
