Overhead Crane Safety Awareness

This one-day program provides a foundational understanding of overhead crane safety. Emphasis is placed on knowledge and practical skills required by overhead crane operators. By utilizing a “hazard assessment” model to approach lifting, the student is equipped to approach lifting tasks proactively. The responsibilities of both employer and worker are covered, as well as the regulations governing overhead cranes and safe rigging practices.

Learning Objectives

  • Alberta regulations regarding employee, employer responsibilities
  • Alberta regulations regarding crane safety, rigging safety
  • Hazard assessment model to overhead crane safety
  • Overhead crane inspection requirements
  • Safe rigging practices
  • Rigging inspection and rejection criteria
  • Sling angles and the effect of sling angles on lifting capacity
  • Eye-bolt safety practices
  • Hitch types and limitations
  • Detailed load calculation including sling angles, wire rope strengths, etc.
  • Hands on overhead crane and rigging inspection
  • Application of learned knowledge to safely perform lift with overhead crane

Competencies

The competencies of this program are tested through a knowledge-based examination, and through 100% participation in the program. Completion of practical skills evaluation to defined competency standards. Participants must achieve a minimum pass mark of 70% on a written competency exam.
